David C. Driskell:
The Collector

The Portland Museum of Art | August 29, 2025 – March 1, 2026

This exhibit will offer a rare glimpse into David C. and Thelma G. Driskell’s personal art collection, presented alongside David C. Driskell’s own artworks.

The exhibition invites audiences to explore Driskell’s profound impact as an artist, educator, mentor, and collector, alongside the ways his legacy continues to shape museums, art history, and the cultural fabric of Maine. Driskell served as the Elder Advisor to Indigo Arts Alliance, providing instrumental mentorship, advice and support that sowed the seeds of our organization.

In celebration of the exhibition and honoring Driskell’s lasting influence, we are partnering with the PMA for the 2025 Barnet Scholars Lecture. Our Co-founders, Daniel and Marcia Minter will offer opening remarks, followed by a panel featuring some of our #DavidCDriskellFellowship alums: Rosalba Breazeale ’23 (@rbreaz), Rikiesha Metzger ’24 (@rikiesha_metzger), Benjamin Spalding ’22 & ’25 (@spalding.wav), and Kevin Xiques ’23 (@kevin.xiques).

Moderated in conversation by IAA Executive Director, Jordia Benjamin, these four artists will reflect on how Driskell’s legacy continues to shape their artistic paths.
